How this list is made
Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.
This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-1, run 5 October 2026.
- “What are the best crime thrillers ever written? Looking for proper gripping ones I won't be able to put down.”
- “I've never really read crime thrillers before but fancy giving them a go. Where should I start?”
- “Can you recommend some of the best crime thrillers that have come out in the last year or so? I've run out of things to read.”
- “Are there any underrated or lesser-known crime thrillers that deserve more attention? I'm bored of the same bestsellers everywhere.”
- “I need a book for my dad's birthday. He's 62, loves Line of Duty and old-school detective shows, so what crime thriller would he enjoy?”
- “I've got a long flight to Australia coming up. Can you suggest some crime thrillers that will keep me hooked for hours?”
- “Can you recommend some good police procedural crime thrillers that feel realistic, with proper detective work rather than far-fetched twists?”
- “I absolutely loved Gone Girl and want something similar with twisty plots and unreliable narrators. What should I read next?”
- “I've read everything by Ian Rankin and loved it. Which crime authors should I try next?”
- “Our book club wants a crime thriller that will get everyone talking and arguing about the ending. Any suggestions?”
- “What are the best crime thrillers by British authors? I'd love something with a proper British setting and feel.”
- “Which crime thriller series is worth starting from book one? I want something with lots of books so I can get properly stuck in.”
A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
