How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best dystopian novels ever written? I want to work my way through the really good ones.”
  2. “I've never really read any dystopian fiction before, where should I start?”
  3. “Any good dystopian novels that have come out in the last year or so? I've read all the classics and want something new.”
  4. “What are some underrated dystopian books that not many people have heard of but are actually brilliant?”
  5. “I need a birthday present for my dad who loves history and political thrillers, which dystopian novel would he enjoy?”
  6. “I've got a long flight to Australia coming up, what's a gripping dystopian novel that'll keep me hooked for hours?”
  7. “Can you recommend some good climate change dystopian novels? Not too bleak, ideally, but realistic.”
  8. “I just finished The Handmaid's Tale and loved it, what should I read next that has a similar feel?”
  9. “I'm obsessed with George Orwell's writing, what other authors or books should I try next?”
  10. “Our book club wants a dystopian novel that will get everyone arguing and debating, any suggestions?”
  11. “What are the best dystopian novels by British authors? I'd love to read something with a UK setting.”
  12. “Is there a dystopian series worth getting into that's finished, so I can binge the whole thing?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
