How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best horror novels ever written? I want to read some proper scary ones.”
  2. “I've never really read horror before but fancy giving it a go. Where should I start?”
  3. “What are the best horror books that have come out in the last year or so? Looking for something new and properly creepy.”
  4. “Can you recommend some underrated horror novels that most people haven't heard of?”
  5. “I need a birthday present for my dad who loves old-school ghost stories and Stephen King-type thrillers but has read all the obvious ones. Any ideas?”
  6. “I've got a long weekend away in a cabin in the Lake District coming up. What horror book would be perfect for reading on a rainy night there?”
  7. “Can you suggest some good folk horror novels set in the British countryside? I love that creepy village and old traditions vibe.”
  8. “I just finished The Haunting of Hill House and loved it. What other books are like it?”
  9. “I've read nearly everything by Stephen King and I'm looking for something new. Which authors or books should I try next?”
  10. “Our book club wants to pick a horror novel this month that will get everyone talking. Any suggestions that aren't too gory?”
  11. “What are the best horror novels by British authors? I'd love something with a proper UK feel to it.”
  12. “Is there a horror series that's worth getting into? I like the idea of a few books in the same world so I can really sink into it.”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
