How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-1, run 5 October 2026.

  1. “what are the best memoirs ever written? trying to find something properly good to read next”
  2. “I've never really read a memoir before, where should I start?”
  3. “what are the best memoirs that have come out in the last year or so? I'd like something fresh”
  4. “can you recommend some underrated memoirs that most people haven't heard of but are worth reading?”
  5. “I need a birthday present for my mum who loves cosy, funny true stories about family life, any memoir suggestions?”
  6. “I've got a long flight to Australia coming up, what memoir would keep me gripped for hours?”
  7. “what are some good memoirs about growing up in a council estate or working class childhood in Britain?”
  8. “I absolutely loved Educated by Tara Westover, what other memoirs are similar to it?”
  9. “I've just finished everything by Bill Bryson and loved it, which memoirs or travel writers should I read next?”
  10. “can you suggest a memoir for our book club that will get everyone talking and arguing a bit?”
  11. “what are the best memoirs by British authors? I'd love something that feels properly British”
  12. “is there one memoir I should read first to understand life in the Second World War from someone who actually lived through it?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
