How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best middle grade novels of all time? Looking for stuff my 10 year old will actually enjoy.”
  2. “My daughter is 9 and just getting into proper chapter books, where should we start with middle grade novels?”
  3. “What are the best middle grade books that have come out in the last year or so? My son has read pretty much everything older.”
  4. “Can you recommend some underrated middle grade novels that most people haven't heard of? We've done all the obvious ones.”
  5. “I need a book for my nephew who's turning 11 and loves football and funny stories. Any middle grade suggestions?”
  6. “Any good middle grade novels for a long car journey to Cornwall? Two kids, ages 8 and 11, and they get bored fast.”
  7. “Can you suggest middle grade fantasy novels with a strong female lead and lots of humour? My daughter is 10.”
  8. “My son loved Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, what other middle grade books are similar?”
  9. “My daughter has read everything by Roald Dahl, what should she read next?”
  10. “Which middle grade novel would be good for a parent and child book club that would get everyone talking? Kids are about 10 to 12.”
  11. “What are the best middle grade novels by British authors? I'd love something with a proper British feel for my 9 year old.”
  12. “Is there a middle grade series worth starting that will keep my 10 year old hooked for ages? He gets through books really quickly.”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
