How this list is made
Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.
This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.
- “What are the best parenting books out there? I'm a first-time mum and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the choices.”
- “I've never read a parenting book before, where should I start? Something practical and not too preachy please.”
- “What are the best parenting books that have come out in the last year or so? Looking for up to date advice.”
- “Are there any underrated or lesser-known parenting books that are actually worth reading? Tired of seeing the same big names everywhere.”
- “What parenting book could I buy for my brother who's about to become a dad for the first time? He doesn't normally read much so nothing too heavy.”
- “I've had a really hard week with my toddler's tantrums, can you recommend a parenting book that's reassuring and easy to dip into when I'm shattered?”
- “Can you recommend good books on parenting a child with ADHD? Ideally something practical for UK schools and families.”
- “I loved The Whole-Brain Child and want more books like it. Any recommendations?”
- “I really enjoyed everything by Philippa Perry, what parenting authors should I read next?”
- “Which parenting book would make a good pick for our mums' book club? Something that will get us chatting and disagreeing a bit.”
- “What are the best parenting books by British authors? I'd prefer advice that fits UK life, like the NHS and schools here.”
- “If I only read one parenting book on getting my baby to sleep, which one should it be?”
A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
