How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best poetry collections ever published? I'd like to read some proper classics but not sure where to look.”
  2. “I've never really read poetry since school. Which collection should I start with as a complete beginner?”
  3. “What are the best new poetry collections that have come out in the last year or so? Looking for something fresh.”
  4. “Can you recommend some underrated or lesser-known poetry collections that deserve more attention?”
  5. “I need a birthday present for my mum who loves gardening and nature walks. What poetry collection would she enjoy?”
  6. “It's been a really hard week and I want something comforting to read. Any poetry collections that are good for a rainy Sunday on the sofa?”
  7. “Can you suggest some good nature poetry collections focused on the British countryside and seasons?”
  8. “I loved Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. What other poetry collections are similar to it?”
  9. “I've just finished everything by Carol Ann Duffy and loved it. Which poets should I read next?”
  10. “Our book club wants to try a poetry collection this month. Which one would get people talking and arguing a bit?”
  11. “What are the best poetry collections by British poets, either contemporary or classic?”
  12. “Is there a good poetry series or anthology set worth starting, where I can work through several volumes over time?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
