How this list is made
Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.
This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-1, run 5 October 2026.
- “What are the best psychological thrillers ever written? I've read a few but want the ones everyone says are must-reads.”
- “I've never really read a psychological thriller before, where should I start? Something gripping but not too confusing please.”
- “What are the best psychological thrillers that have come out in the last year or so? Looking for something fresh with a proper twist.”
- “Can you recommend some underrated psychological thrillers that don't get talked about much? I'm bored of seeing the same ones on every list.”
- “I need a book for my mum's birthday, she loves twisty psychological thrillers and gets through about one a week. What should I get her?”
- “Going on a 10 hour flight next month, which psychological thriller would keep me hooked the whole way? Something I can't put down.”
- “Can you suggest some psychological thrillers with an unreliable narrator where you can't trust anything they say? The more mind-bending the better.”
- “I absolutely loved Gone Girl, what other psychological thrillers are like it? I want that same dark, twisty feel.”
- “I've read everything by Ruth Ware and need something new, which authors or books should I try next?”
- “Can you recommend a psychological thriller for our book club that will get everyone arguing about the ending? We're a group of six, mostly in our 40s.”
- “What are the best psychological thrillers by British authors? I'd love something with a proper UK setting.”
- “Is there a psychological thriller series worth starting from book one? I like getting properly stuck into characters over several books.”
A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
