How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best romantic comedy novels of all time? I want something properly funny and swoony.”
  2. “I've never really read rom-coms before, where should I start? Is there a good one to ease me in?”
  3. “What are the best new romantic comedy books that have come out in the last year or so?”
  4. “Are there any underrated or lesser-known rom-com novels I should be reading? I feel like I keep seeing the same ones everywhere.”
  5. “I need a birthday present for my mum who loves cosy, funny love stories and Sunday afternoon reading. Which rom-com novel would you suggest?”
  6. “What's a good light romantic comedy to read on a rainy weekend when I just want to curl up and laugh?”
  7. “Can you recommend some enemies-to-lovers rom-coms that are actually funny and not too steamy?”
  8. “I absolutely loved Bridget Jones's Diary, what other romantic comedy novels are similar to it?”
  9. “I've read everything by Marian Keyes and loved it. Who should I read next?”
  10. “Our book club wants a romantic comedy that will get people chatting and arguing a bit. Any ideas for a good pick?”
  11. “What are the best romantic comedy novels by British authors? I like that dry, self-deprecating humour.”
  12. “Is there a romantic comedy series worth starting where each book follows a different couple?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
