How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best spirituality books ever written? I'd like to read something that actually changes how I see things.”
  2. “I'm completely new to spirituality and don't know where to begin. What kind of book should I start with?”
  3. “What are the best new spirituality books that have come out in the last year or so?”
  4. “Are there any underrated or lesser-known spirituality books that deserve more attention?”
  5. “I need a gift for my mum who's been going through a rough patch and loves gardening and quiet mornings. Which spirituality book would suit her?”
  6. “Which spirituality book would be good to read on a rainy weekend when I just want to slow down and feel calmer?”
  7. “Can you recommend good books on Celtic spirituality and the old pagan traditions of Britain?”
  8. “I really loved The Power of Now. What other books are similar to it?”
  9. “I've read everything by Eckhart Tolle and loved it. Who should I read next?”
  10. “Which spirituality book would make a good book club pick and get people talking? We're a mixed group, not all of us religious.”
  11. “What are the best spirituality books by British authors?”
  12. “Is there a spirituality series worth starting, or if not, what's the one book I should read first on the subject?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
