How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best urban fantasy novels of all time? I'm after something with great world-building and a modern city setting.”
  2. “I've never read urban fantasy before, where should I start? I mostly read crime thrillers and want to try something a bit magical.”
  3. “What are the best urban fantasy books that have come out in the last year or so? I've run out of things to read.”
  4. “Any underrated urban fantasy novels that don't get talked about much? I've read all the big names and want something different.”
  5. “I need a book for my dad who loves detective stories and a bit of magic, what urban fantasy would you recommend for his birthday?”
  6. “Can you recommend a cosy urban fantasy to read on a rainy weekend? Something easy and fun that I can get lost in.”
  7. “Are there any good urban fantasy books with a witchy or paranormal detective vibe set in a gritty modern city? Not too romantic please.”
  8. “I loved Rivers of London, what other urban fantasy books are similar to it?”
  9. “I just finished everything by Neil Gaiman and I'm gutted, what should I read next?”
  10. “Which urban fantasy novel would make a good book club pick? We want something with themes that'll get everyone chatting.”
  11. “What are the best urban fantasy books by British authors? I love ones set in London or other UK cities.”
  12. “Which urban fantasy series is worth starting right now? I want something with lots of books so I can get properly stuck in.”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
