How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best children's picture books of all time? Looking for ones that parents and kids both actually enjoy.”
  2. “I've just had my first baby and have no idea where to start with picture books. What should I buy first?”
  3. “What are the best new children's picture books that have come out in the last year or so? Our shelves are getting a bit stale.”
  4. “Can you recommend some underrated or lesser-known picture books that deserve more attention? We've read all the big names already.”
  5. “I need a picture book for my niece who's turning four and is obsessed with dinosaurs and digging. Any ideas?”
  6. “It's pouring down this weekend and I've got two kids stuck indoors. What picture books would make a cosy rainy day read?”
  7. “Can you suggest some picture books that help a toddler cope with starting nursery and separation anxiety?”
  8. “My son loves The Gruffalo and we've read it a hundred times. What other picture books are similar?”
  9. “My daughter has read everything by Julia Donaldson. Which authors or books should we try next?”
  10. “I run a little parents' book group at our primary school and we want to pick a picture book that gets people talking. Any suggestions?”
  11. “What are the best picture books by British authors and illustrators? I'd love to find some that feel properly British.”
  12. “Are there any picture book series that are worth starting with a five year old who loves funny stories?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
