How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-1, run 5 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best health and fitness books I should read? I'm in the UK and want something actually useful, not just fad stuff.”
  2. “I've never read a fitness book before and want to get into running and general health. Where should I start?”
  3. “Any good health and fitness books that came out in the last year or so? I'm fed up of old advice being rehashed.”
  4. “What are some underrated or lesser-known health and fitness books that deserve more attention?”
  5. “My dad is 62 and just retired, he's started doing parkrun and wants to get stronger. What fitness book would make a good Christmas present for him?”
  6. “I've got a long flight to Australia coming up and want a health book that'll motivate me to get back in shape when I land. Any recommendations?”
  7. “Can you recommend good books on strength training for women over 40, particularly around menopause?”
  8. “I loved Why We Sleep and found it fascinating. What other books are like it?”
  9. “I've read everything by Dr Michael Mosley and really enjoyed it. Who or what should I read next?”
  10. “Our book club wants to pick a health or wellbeing book that will get people talking and arguing. Any suggestions?”
  11. “What are the best health and fitness books written by British authors?”
  12. “I'm new to nutrition and want to eat better without getting confused by all the conflicting advice. What's the one book I should read first?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
