How this list is made
Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.
This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.
- “What are the best historical romance novels ever written? I want something I can really get lost in.”
- “I've never read historical romance before, where should I start? Is there a good first book that isn't too heavy going?”
- “Can you recommend some of the best historical romance novels that have come out in the last year or so?”
- “Are there any underrated or lesser-known historical romance books that deserve more attention? I'm bored of the usual popular ones.”
- “I need a birthday present for my nan who loves Regency romances and cosy afternoon reading. What historical romance would you suggest?”
- “I've got a long flight to Australia coming up, what historical romance would keep me hooked for hours?”
- “Can you recommend some good enemies-to-lovers historical romances set in Regency England? Proper slow burn if possible.”
- “I absolutely loved Outlander and need something similar. What other historical romance books are like it?”
- “I've read everything by Georgette Heyer and loved it. Which historical romance authors should I try next?”
- “Which historical romance would be a good pick for our book club? We want something that will get everyone talking and disagreeing.”
- “What are the best historical romance novels written by British authors? Ideally ones with a proper British setting.”
- “Is there a historical romance series worth starting that I can binge over the next few months? Preferably one where each book can be read fairly well on its own.”
A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
