How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best books about anxiety that actually help? I've struggled with it for years and want something worth reading.”
  2. “I'm completely new to self-help books and just got diagnosed with generalised anxiety. Where should I start?”
  3. “Are there any good books on anxiety that have come out in the last year or so? I'd like something up to date.”
  4. “What are some underrated or lesser-known books about anxiety that more people should read?”
  5. “I want to get something for my mum who's been really anxious since she retired. She likes gentle, practical reads. Any book ideas?”
  6. “I've got a really stressful week coming up at work and my anxiety is through the roof. What's a calming book I could read in the evenings?”
  7. “Can anyone recommend books about health anxiety specifically? I keep googling symptoms and spiralling.”
  8. “I loved Notes on a Nervous Planet and want more books like it, funny and honest about anxiety but not too clinical. What would you suggest?”
  9. “I've read everything by Matt Haig and found it so comforting. Which author or book about anxiety should I read next?”
  10. “Our book club wants to pick a book about anxiety that will get people talking without being too heavy. Any suggestions?”
  11. “What are the best books about anxiety written by British authors? I'd like something that feels relatable to life in the UK.”
  12. “If I could only read one book to understand and manage anxiety, which should I read first?”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
