How this list is made

Every week we ask the same 12 questions, 2 times each, of ChatGPT and Claude (both searching the web live) and Gemini (answering from what it knows; Google's terms don't let tools like ours analyse its web-search answers). The questions are worded the way readers really ask. We read which books each answer recommends, count each book once however it is spelled, leave out any book or author the question itself named, and rank by the share of answers that name it. A list is published only when every assistant answered.

This week: 72 answers (48 live, 24 from memory). Question set uk-2, run 6 October 2026.

  1. “What are the best graphic novels ever made? I want to get properly into them but don't know what's actually worth my money.”
  2. “I've never read a graphic novel before, where should I start? I mostly read normal novels and a bit of non-fiction.”
  3. “What are the best graphic novels that have come out in the last year or so? Looking for something fresh to pick up.”
  4. “Are there any underrated or lesser-known graphic novels that deserve more attention? I'm bored of seeing the same big names recommended.”
  5. “I need a graphic novel to buy for my dad who loves history books and war documentaries, any ideas? He's 68 and has never read a comic in his life.”
  6. “Can you recommend a good graphic novel to read on a rainy weekend in? Something cosy and immersive that I can finish in a day or two.”
  7. “What are the best autobiographical graphic memoirs about growing up and mental health? I like the honest, personal kind of storytelling.”
  8. “I loved Maus and want something with the same emotional weight. What other graphic novels are like it?”
  9. “I've read everything by Alan Moore and loved it, so what should I read next? I like dark, clever stories with lots of layers.”
  10. “Which graphic novel would be a good pick for our book club that will get people talking? Most of us don't normally read comics so it needs to be accessible.”
  11. “What are the best graphic novels by British authors and artists? I'd love to support UK creators if possible.”
  12. “Which graphic novel series is worth starting if I want something I can get properly stuck into? Ideally with a proper ending and not dragging on forever.”

A list shows what the assistants said that week. It is not a ranking of quality or of sales, and nobody pays to be on it.
